Your Guide to the Car Marketplace

Buying a Used Car in Iceland

Iceland has a small but active private car market. Prices are higher than in most European countries due to import duties, VAT, and a limited supply of vehicles on the island.

The community marketplace lets you buy directly from fellow expats and residents. Expect to pay between 300,000 and 8,000,000 ISK for a reliable used car depending on age, condition, and type. Four-wheel-drive vehicles command a premium because of Iceland's highland roads and winter conditions. Always negotiate. Asking prices are rarely final.

What to Check Before Buying

Every vehicle in Iceland has a digital history you can look up for free. Skipping this step is the most common mistake expat buyers make.

Check the car's registration at Samgöngustofa (the Icelandic Transport Authority) to verify ownership, outstanding liens, and accident history. Confirm that the Skoðun (mandatory annual inspection) is current. An expired inspection means the car cannot be legally driven. Pay special attention to rust, especially on the undercarriage and wheel arches, as Iceland's coastal salt air and gravel roads accelerate corrosion.

Selling Your Car as an Expat

Listing your car here is free. Most sellers get their first inquiry within a week, especially for popular makes like Toyota, Subaru, and Hyundai.

Set your price in ISK and include clear photos. Listings with 5+ images get significantly more views. You'll need the vehicle registration certificate (skráningarskírteini) for ownership transfer. The buyer and seller complete the transfer online through Samgöngustofa. If you're leaving Iceland, plan to sell at least a month before departure to allow time for the process.
