Renting in Iceland

How Renting Works

Three things every expat renter needs to know before signing anything.

01

Get your kennitala

Iceland's national ID number is required by most landlords. Apply at Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá) shortly after arriving.

02

Search the right platforms

Leigulistinn, Facebook Groups, and rental agencies each have different listings. Cast a wide net and act fast — good apartments go in hours.

03

Sign and register your address

Icelandic leases must be in writing. Once signed, register your address at Registers Iceland within a week.
